Unit 17 May and might

A. May and Might는 비슷한 의미다.

May는 아카데믹하거나 formal한 상황에서 많이 쓴다.

ex) The seeds from the plant may grow up to 20 centimetres in length

 

구어에서는 might가 미래 상황에 쓴다.

I might paint the kitchen purple

 

 

B. 가능성에 대해 물을 때 may를 쓰지 않고 could나 be likely를 쓴다.

Are you likely to be in Spain again this summer?( not may)

 

might는 쓸 수 있지만, 공식적(formal)한 상황만이다.

Might they be persuaded to change their minds?

 

허락을 받을 떄 쓸 수 있다.

 

 

C. Might는 일반적인 경우에 쓴다 (May x), 공식적 상황

ex) Years ago children might be sent down mines at the age of six

 

 

D. may/ might - but으로 단점이 있지만 이것이 장점에 의해 메워질 때 쓴다.

She might not have danced very gratefully, but she had a lot of energy and enthusiasm
