Unit 15 Can, could, be able to and be allowed to

A. 우리는 can이나 could 대신에 be able to를 쓰는 경우도 있지만, 쓰지 않는 경우도 있다.

현재 시점에서 일어나고 있는 일

수동태랑 같이는 be able to를 잘 안쓴다

Films can now easily be streamed online 

->수동태랑 같이 쓰면 너무 길어진다.

 

어떻게 하는지에 대해 물어볼 때

Can you cook?

 

 

B. 일반적인 능력이 아니라 하나의 단일 성취에는 be able to를 쓰는 경향이 있다.

Sophie could play the flute quite well(일반적인 능력)

She swam strongly and was able to cross the river easily, even though it was swollen by the heavy rain

Could는 다음에서 보다 자연스럽게 쓰인다.

1)부정문

2) feel, hear, see, smell, taste or thinking verb;.believe, decide, remember, understand와 같이쓰일 때

3) the only thing, place, time과 같이 the only랑 같이 쓰일 때

4) almost, hardly, just, nearly등과 같이 쓰일 때

 

C. can and could possibility

can은 가능성이 높고, could 낮다.

 

You can borrow it (넌 빌릴 수 있어. 빌려도 돼)

You could borrow it(아마 빌릴 수 있을 걸?)

 

부정문에서는 can't는 이론적으로나 실제로나 백퍼 불가능한 일에 쓴다.

The doctor can't see you this morning; he's busy at hospital

 

D. 실제 가능성이 있을 때는 can, 더 낮으면 could

 

E. Could and be allowed to: permission

허가에서 둘다 쓸 수 있지만 일반적인 상황에서는 could, 특정 상황에서는 be allowed to를 자주 쓴다.

Although he didn't have a ticket, Ned was allowed to come in

 

부정문에서는 일반적이든 특정 상황이든 둘 다 쓴다.
