Unit 16 will, would and used to

A. will and would

특성이나 습관을 말할 때 쓴다.

Every day Dan will come home from work and turn on the TV

at school she would always sit quietly and pay attention

 

things that are or were always true

Cold weather will kill certain plants

 

특정, 구체적 사건에서는 will이나 would를 사용하지 않는다.

Each time i gave him a problem he would solve it for me. 

Last night I gave him a problem and he solved it for me

 

그러나 부정문에서는 둘 다 쓸 수 있다.

 

B. 다른 사람의 행동이나 습관을 비판/ 비난을 강조할 때 will이나 would를 쓸 수 있다.

She just won't do the washing up when I ask her

 

C. 결론이나 추측을 할 때 will을 쓴다

Martina will be at home by now. Let's go and see her

 

D. would and used to

과거에 있었지만 지금은 아닌 일에 쓴다.

would는 분명한 상황에서만 쓴다. (시간부사어구, time reference가 있어야 한다)

We used to play in the parden

Whenever we went to my uncle's house, we would/used to play in the garden

 

상태에 있어서는 used to만 쓴다.

The factory used to be over there

Didn't you useto have red hair?

 

how many times(얼마나 많이)와 how long(얼마나 오래), 한 번 일어난 일 등에는 used to나 would를 쓰지 않는다.

We visited Switzerland four times during the 1990s

 

E. Would/ will have + 과거 분사

비현실적인 일에 이를쓴다.(가정법처럼)

 

그러나 비현실적이지만 일어난 일에는 will have+ 과거분사를 쓴다.

As it was cloudy, few people will have seen last night's lunar eclipse
